Hailed as the future of folk music by Pentangle’s John Renbourn, John Smith’s genre-blurring sound bridges the Atlantic. The Living Kind, produced by Americana maestro Joe Henry, is a masterful blend of intimacy and atmosphere, inspired by Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden, John Martyn’s Solid Air, and Joni Mitchell’s Hejira.
Born from personal trials—his mother’s cancer, his father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and his wife’s life-threatening pregnancy loss—the album explores family, responsibility, and transformation. Recorded live in four days at Henry’s Maine home, the sessions captured raw emotion and spontaneity, with a stellar band including Levon Henry, Ross Gallagher, and Patrick Warren.
Tracks like Milestones and Silver Mine reflect Smith’s journey balancing family and artistry, while Horizons and Trick Of The Light showcase his knack for warm, intricate melodies. The Living Kind is Smith’s most authentic work yet—a poignant, cohesive song-cycle that resonates with darkness, warmth, and undeniable truth.
“It might be the first record I’ve made that really sounds like me,” Smith says. “With The Living Kind, I know it’s good.”
