Grease The Arena Experience opened last night at Hisense Arena.
This 1971 rock musical is set in a fictitious school in America and is the story of a challenging period of human life - adolescence. The story looks at how teenagers operate in different aspects of life such as interacting within their peer groups, getting a sense of self, exploring their sexuality, bullying, rebellion, gang culture and friendships. All this is explored through over 20 brilliant pieces of music.
Tim O'Connor's Grease The Arena Experience involved an impressive 3000 people. There were 850 performers in the mass ensemble. The stage at Hisense was pumping and jam-packed with young enthusiastic artists. Their passion reverberated right throughout this huge venue. Amongst the leads, there were some impressive voices and character role-playing particularly that of Meghan O'Shea (Sandy) and Damon Wade (Danny). Equally strong were Chris Geoghegan (Kenickie) and the leader of the pink ladies, Ruby Clark (Rizzo). Courtney Act (Shane Jenek) is fabulous as the Teen Angel.
The show features over 20 songs from one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time. The audience went wild when they heard "Grease Lightning", "You're the One That I Want", "Beauty School Dropout" and "Summer Nights". My daughter and I had to get out of our seats and dance - it is impossible to sit still to this music!
Managing 3000 people and such a large crew on stage is a massive project management undertaking. The direction and choreography were fabulous, well done Callum Mansfield and team!
You can still see the show in Melbourne today at 2pm and 7.30pm. Well worth going to
