Broadway Quality Theatre in Western Sydney
The modern girl power ‘Legally Blonde’ brings Broadway quality production to Western Sydney in a family friendly (though sometimes naughty!) musical filled with catchy songs and a heart felt plot. Legally Blonde the Musical is running from July 27th until August 11th at Riverside Theatre Parramatta being produced by Packemin Productions and Riverside Theatres.
At face value, Legally Blonde is a simple tale of a doe-eyed girl who travels to the other side of America to study at an Ivy league school to win back her ex-boyfriend. However, below the surface it is so much more, as the protagonist is consistently undermined by her peers and superiors. At several times in the production women are treated as objects to advance a man’s goals, but in the end, it becomes clear that women are capable of so much more when they stay true to themselves.
The mammoth 49-person cast was engaging and realistic, with each character welcoming the audience into the world of Legally Blonde. Mikayla Williams as Elle Wood was especially phenomenal and executed the role naturally, perhaps in part due to the actress having had experience in the same role for a different production. The vocal quality was beyond expectations, and the voices of each cast member both solo and combined were mesmerising and could effortlessly compete with the West End production.
The set and props created a real ‘wow’ factor that added to each scene perfectly. Likewise, Audrey Currie has done a fantastic job as costume designer, with the entire cast being gloriously dressed for every single scene. A live orchestra was utilised for the production which enhanced the high-quality feel of Legally Blonde. The only flaw in the extraordinary production was that at times cast members microphones were turned on too late resulting in the start of a cast members sentence being missed.
The production easily competes with some of the most prestigious productions to date making Legally Blonde: The Musical not to be missed, and with prices starting from only $42 it is also highly affordable. Tickets will sell out, and if you miss it add Packemin Productions next musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, to your diaries for February 2019 at Riverside Theatre, as this is no doubt a production company to keep your eye on.
