A Hilarious and Wonderful Experience
Adulting is a refreshingly honest comedy cabaret written by and starring Tash York which is currently running a National Tour across Australia. I had the pleasure of attending Tash York’s performance at the fringe festival Bondi Feast on 27th July 2018.
Adulting is an ode to the child inside us all, who dreamt of the day they would be an adult and could do what they wanted whilst being shamefully unaware of the true realities of growing up. Through comedy lines, singing and the occasional audience engagement, Tash York creates a fantastic show that is starkly honest in detailing the struggles we have as adults in the modern age. A highlight was the popular songs Tash York has rewritten to reflect adulthood such as Part of Your World (from The Little Mermaid) which becomes a song about poor people dreaming of being part of the world of the rich and famous.
Over the 1 hour show, it became blindingly obvious that Tash York is an incredibly talented performer who has found her true calling in the niche of comedy cabaret. But for all the jokes Tash York conveys, the number one strength of Adulting is her phenomenal voice. This is best demonstrated when Tash York finishes the show with a soft musical dedication to her mother of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”. During this beautiful final performance, there were few dry eyes in the house.
Tash York’s costume is eccentric to match her performance persona with big hair and a big puffy dress which combine to give her an edgy appearance. The piano accompaniment by Bobby is equally fantastic and this decision to have a live accompaniment instead of pre-recorded music enhances the feel of the production. Given the small size of the venue, the lighting was also well managed with the lighting changing to reflect each songs themes. Very few props are used in the production, but of particular note is a sleeping bag which is used in a comedy rewording of a popular song that will leave you speechless or laughing off your seat.
Tash York is no doubt a triple threat who can write songs, sing, and make you laugh all at once. If you find Tash York in your town, GO! It’s a show that cannot be missed.
